On Karadzic

by John MacFarlane (more posts by this author)

Journalist Roger Cohen's short, plaintive op-ed on Radovan Karadzic, finally arrested on war crimes charges, somehow captures the climate of fear during the war in Serbia and the remorse and regret that lingers more than a decade later.

Objectivity and neutrality are not synonymous. The head is useless
without the heart. War teaches that better than journalism school. The
unseeing eyes of young Sarajevan women penetrated by shrapnel had
taught me the rights and wrongs of the war long before I met you. Still
I wanted to look you in the eye.
