Don Edkins

Don Edkins is a documentary filmmaker and producer. He produced the Southern African series on truth and reconciliation Landscape of Memory (1998), and the multi-awarded documentary project Steps for the Future (2001/04) – a collection of 38 films about Southern Africa in the time of HIV and AIDS. He is Executive Producer of the STEPS International global documentary project Why Democracy? 10 long and 18 short films.

The Free Zone Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia - freezonebelgrade.org - is young, fresh and noisy. Just four years old, this year (7 to 12 November) it had a new team. Srdjan Keca, the programme director is 28 years old, with his equally young colleagues Bojana Cućilović (festival coordinator), Jeja Veljković (guest team organisor) and Dragana Jovanović (press liason).

Monday 22nd September. Cape Town.

It’s been an interesting weekend, politically speaking, in South Africa. I had been away travelling for a week and came back on Saturday to find out that the President of South Africa - Thabo Mbeki - had been deposed. He had been ‘asked’ by the ANC to resign. He did.

I drove across the border from South Africa to visit the mobile cinema team at Sesotho Media. It is partly because of the project that we started (Steps for the Future) eight years previously, a YLE/Day Zero co-production of 38 documentary and short films about people living in the time of HIV and AIDS
