![]() The sad reality is that Zimbabwe’s downward spiral seems to be hitting new lows every day. Robert Mugabe, a despot so astute in playing on the anti-colonial Twenty-one days ago, many citizens flirted with the idea of a fair election but have since become increasingly anxious at the lack of transparency by the ruling party and electoral commission. To say that Zimbabwe is another African basket-case would assume that its people and supporters have given up hope. That has not happened. An observation of Zimbabwe over the last few years underlines the yearning its people have for a democratic system that they have never experienced. Whether or not the light at the end of the tunnel is becoming visible, Zimbabweans will have to grapple with a system called democracy which is by no means an ideal destination. Sadly, their journey is yet to begin, but hopefully in year’s time, its 29th independence day will be one of true celebration.
