Here you can find some of the most interesting institutions and organizations that work with democracy. Some of them you probably know. Others will hopefully be brand new. To make it easy for you to navigate we have organized them according to region.

Africa

Nigerian Lighthouse

A non-governmental organization which aims to encourage & defend the principles of Nigeria's democracy by combining information technology and the collaborative power of Nigerian citizens at home and abroad. Nigerian Lighthouse aims to build upon the recent success of the Nigerian Proclamation project and continue to encourage collaboration as a tool to improve governance on the local, state and federal level.

Afrobarometer

Afrobarometer is an independent, non-partisan research project that measures the social, poilitical and economic atmosphere in Africa.

Center for Democracy and Development

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is to provide an independent space to reflect critically on the challenges posed to the democratisation and development processes in West Africa, and to generate dialogue on alternative pathways that are universally relevant and context sensitive.

EISA

EISA strives for excellence in the promotion of credible elections, participatory democracy, human rights culture, and the strengthening of governance institutions for the consolidation of democracy in Africa.

Fahamu

Fahamu has a vision of the world where people organise to emancipate themselves from all forms of oppression, recognize their social responsibilities, respect each other’s differences, and realize their full potential.

International Association for Political Science Students

The International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) is a platform for political science students and students interested in political science issues. The Association is international, politically independent, non-profit and student-run, and aims to have global impact in the political science sphere.

Institute for Democracy in South Africa

Institute for Democracy in South Africa(Idasa) is an independent public interest organisation committed to promoting sustainable democracy based on active citizenship, democratic institutions, and social justice.

Institute for Security Studies

The ISS is a regional research institute operating across sub-Saharan Africa. As a leading African human security research institution, the institute is guided by a broad approach to security, which reflects the changing nature and origin of threats to human development. Areas of research include arms control, conflict management, terrorism, civil society and democracy.

Justice for Africa

Justice Africa is a research institute and advocacy organisation founded in 1999 in London to campaign for human rights and social justice across Africa.

Nederlands instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika

NiZA cooperates with people and organisations in Africa and Europe to strive for a democratic southern Africa.

Asia

ARDA

The concept of ARDA came about at the Asia Regional Good Governance Conference held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on August 5, 2000. The Declaration of Unity, drafted and adopted by those present, would serve as the vision to bring together servants of democracy all over Asia in our common struggle for freedom and democracy.

APRN

A network of leading research NGOs in the region with the main purpose of exchanging information on international issues, as well as experiences, technologies, and methods in research. At present, the APRN has 50 member-organizations from 19 countries.

ARRC

The study is aimed at documenting the different methodologies employed in non-formal human rights education programs and assess these methodologies in terms of type of users, issues covered, materials employed, results obtained, weaknesses and limitations, advantages and areas for improvement.

Brain NET

Brain NET is pioneer in Internet Service industry in Pakistan and considered to be largest Internet service provider with greater geographical coverage and vast range of internet solutions for consumer and corporate sector.

Centre for Democratic Institutions

CDI responds to the needs of developing countries in the field of good governance and democratic institutions. The centre was established as an Australian Government initiative and receives its core funding through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). Its geographic focus is the Asia-Pacific region.

WFDA

An international forum, with a working title World Forum for Democratization in Asia (WFDA), be inaugurated in 2005 to advance the democratic agenda in Asia. WFDA will serve to reaffirm and revalidate the core values of Asian democrats and expand the awareness of them among Asian peoples.

Europe

CIPDD

The Caucasus Institute for Peace, Democracy and Development – CIPDD, a Tbilisi based non-governmental organization (www.cipdd.org), invites all interested individuals and/or organizations to participate in a tender for conducting an expert survey within the framework of its recent initiative Political Expectations.

Eurasia Foundation

Eurasia Foundation is a privately managed non-profit organization supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other public and private donors.

Foundation for Education for Democracy

The mission of the Foundation for Education for Democracy is to promote ideas about democracy and the free market economy. The Foundation promote skills necessary to exercise civic duties in a democratic society among teachers and democratic leaders in Poland, other East European countries and Central Asia.

FFZG

Research and Training Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship is a self-sustaining unit of the Faculty of Philosophy University of Zagreb.

IDEE

The Institute for Democracy in Eastern Europe (IDEE) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the active promotion of democracy, civil society, and human rights throughout Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and other communist or post-communist countries.

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Right

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, based in Warsaw, was established in 1989. Its creation was preceded by the seven year of activity of the Helsinki Committee in Poland, which existed in the underground since 1982.

FUNDAR - Analising and investigation centre

FUNDAR is an independent institution for investigation, spreading and education around aspects related to democracy and citizen participation

Afghan for Civil Society

Afghans for Civil Society (ACS) was founded in 1998 by Baltimore businessman Qayum Karzai and other Afghans working with the international community to assist the people of Afghanistan in their struggle for freedom and developing a strong civil society.

Civil Forum Institute

CFI is committed to principles of democratic, transparent organization and the empowerment of all people to contribute to improving their social, legal, economic and political conditions.

Middle East Nonviolence and Democracy

Middle East Nonviolence and Democracy (MEND) promotes active nonviolence and encourages alternatives to violence among youth and adults throughout Palestine.

The Israel Democracy Institute

The Israel Democracy Institute was founded as an independent non-partisan think tank. Committed to the principle of parliamentary democracy, and to strengthening and stabilizing it.

International

Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights.

Civil Society International

Civil Society International (CSI) assists independent organizations working for democracy and civil society in countries closed.

World Youth Movement for Democracy

The World Youth Movement for Democracy (WYMD) is a global community of youth and their allies working non-violently for democracy. It was founded by a group of young people, like you, who believe in and work for fair elections, free speech, and human rights. They believe we can be stronger by working together.

School of Democracy

A research and training center for peaceful democratic engineering, and support for the development of the first center of excellence and focal point for democratic governance.
