whydemocracy.net is live and kicking! The new Why Democracy? website went live today. Designed by Fearless Media in Cape Town, the launch of site is designed to take the project to its next level. A central aim of Why Democracy? is to stimulate a global conversation about democracy and civil society. 10 documentaries will be broadcast globally in October this year, and using the films as a catalyst, the website will become the main platform for this conversation. Users will be able to post and discuss related issues in moderated forums and visitors to the site will be able to send in their own short 1 - 2 minute films for uploading and viewing, and to submit opinions and personal accounts about their experiences of democracy. In addition, 15 Why Democracy? short films will be available free to view on the site. During October there will be online Q&A sessions with prominent thinkers and political figures, and linked interactive collaborations with participating online partners, such as OneWorld TV. The site will act as a gateway with links to other exceptional initiatives about democracy and civil society. Future plans include 'democracy games', supporting educational material and translating the site into multiple languages. Executive producer, Don Edkins, sums up: "We want the site to be a platform for users of all ages from around the world to share their experience of what democracy really means to them".
